Senior Research Technician, Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry, Washington University, St Louis, MO

Exciting research tech position in an NIH-funded academic laboratory studying basic and clinical pharmacology of anesthetics, analgesics and related drugs.  The laboratory addresses in vitro and clinical drug metabolism and disposition, drug interactions, toxicity, and basic mechanisms of hepatic and extrahepatic drug metabolism and transport.  The laboratory develops and implements analytical methods in support of basic and clinical investigations.  This will be a senior position, responsible for methods development, assay implementation, consultation to other research technicians, preparing results for publication, and planning and executing experimental analytical approaches.  Will also share responsibilities for overall lab management.  This is an outstanding opportunity for an energetic and creative scientist seeking analytical responsibility.  Washington University is an outstanding research university with a large mass spectrometry community.

Duties and Responsibilities

·   Develop, validate and implement new and existing analytical methods for drugs and metabolites in biological samples, using solid phase, liquid, and on-line extraction techniques, and quantitative HPLC, LC-MS, LC-MS-MS and GC-MS methods as needed to support clinical and basic research projects.

·   Implementation of non-routine analytical work and assist other technicians doing routine analyses.

·   Help plan, implement and supervise (when appropriate) laboratory experiments to achieve scientific objectives outlined in grants and as directed by the PI.  Active input into future approaches will be enthusiastically encouraged.

·   Analyze and prepare analytical results for publication.  Write analytical method reports for inclusion in grant applications and publications.  Assist in proposal and manuscript (coauthor) preparation.

·   Maintain appropriate quality controls, perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repairs of analytical and scientific equipment, and supervise such work delegated to others.

·   Recommendations for new equipment purchases, and supervise installation of new analytical equipment.

Lead Responsibilities

The Senior Research Technician will carry out these duties independently under the general direction of the PI.  S/he may provide assistance to other technicians and interact with various faculty investigators who collaborate with the laboratory.  May also assist in identifying job responsibilities of junior technicians, facilitate their recruitment and hiring, and supervise their work.

Required Education and Qualifications

·   B.S. (Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics) or equivalent degree and experience.

·   Minimum 4 years employment in quantitative analytical methods with demonstrable experience in high sensitivity small molecule assay development, validation, and high-throughput productivity (LC-MS and MS-MS, HPLC-UV, GCMS).

·   Thorough knowledge of MS-MS operation, and experience with basic instrument maintenance and troubleshooting (ABI preferred).

·   Ability to work independently and collaboratively, multitask different projects, take initiative, and identify and execute priorities.

·   Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

M.S. and/or knowledge of chemical synthesis and purification of standards and metabolites for analytical assays, and/or metabolite identification would be an added plus.
